Since it is October, it is The Big Draw month in the UK. I am trying to draw more, so it is really helpful that there is so much to promote the activity of drawing at present.

I had problems trying to draw the skull quickly from the front (all that foreshortening!) and ran out of light yesterday afternoon so had to finish wrestling with it today. I still wanted to keep it relatively quick and broadly drawn in the tinted charcoal. The foreshortening was tricky, and I began to think it looked more like an alien than a dog.

It is interesting how such a familiar animal can look so unfamiliar when drawing it. The first dog I knew (but cannot remember) was a border collie, and the other dogs that I knew well from childhood were Shelties (Shetland Sheepdogs) which also have a lot of collie in them. I should be very familiar with this long-snouted dog skull shape.
