A ceramic ball

I made this when I was a student on pre-degree art and design foundation course. I made quite a lot of ceramic objects, hand-built in stoneware, and experimented with different textures, glazes, and oxides. This is one on which I wrote part of a poem in oxide over glaze, knowing that the words would probably disintegrate in the firing. I can’t remember what poem it is but the forms of the words survived better than I expected. I liked the idea at the time of it being changed by the extreme heat of the kiln, of the words being on a molten surface and becoming part of the fabric.

It remains one of my all-time favourite objects. I wish I’d made more ceramic objects.
